The True Cost of Investing in an Electric Bike

So now you’re getting serious about e-bikes. You’ve been interested for a long time, and you have found time to do some research. But perhaps you are still concerned about the financial investment, and you don’t quite have a clear view of the overall cost of e-bike ownership. Let’s take a deep dive into how owning an e-bike will affect you financially.

The Initial Investment

Electric bikes are the fastest-growing segment of the bicycle industry. E-bikes are hugely popular all around the world, and the US is no exception, with more than a half-million sold within the past 12 months. More and more consumers think of e-bikes as excellent transportation for both commuting and recreational riding. Many riders of conventional bicycles are moving to e-bikes, taking advantage of the powerful motors and long-range batteries that are now readily available.

Certainly, the initial expense of purchasing an electric bicycle can be a relatively significant upfront investment. How much should you expect to pay? Well, that depends…the price of a new e-bike can vary from under $750 to more than $10,000. What should you expect to pay for a quality e-bike that is suitable for recreational riding as well as daily commuting?

Quality Counts

Yes, it is true that you could ease the sticker shock of an e-bike purchase by searching out products selling for even less than $750. The problem is that these e-bikes will not be satisfactory for most riders. E-bikes in the low price range will be either under-powered or built with questionable quality, or perhaps both.

That’s not acceptable because being under-powered and/or built with poor quality control are both safety factors for you, the rider. You don’t have to get a $5,000 or more e-bike to have good quality, but neither can you find it in the very low-priced products. MAGiCYCLE e-bikes are the best combination of both reasonable pricing and excellent quality.

MAGiCYCLE Quality Control

You may have assumed that every e-bike company has at least fairly decent control over the quality of their product. Unfortunately, that is not the case. The truth is, most e-bikes do not even own the factory that manufactures the e-bikes they sell. These companies are taking the quick and easy route, selling e-bikes made by a factory that supplies several companies. All these companies are selling the same e-bike, but with a different brand name and perhaps a different color selection.

How can a company provide good quality control if it doesn’t even own the factory? The answer is simple…it can’t! Magicycle is proud to be one of very few e-bike companies that do own the factory. In fact, the MAGiCYCLE factory has been producing quality electric bikes for adults for more than 16 years. Building high-quality e-bikes does not happen easily or casually. It requires a huge amount of extra effort.

Another high-quality product from MAGiCYCLE

Every Magicycle begins with the award-winning Magicycle Design Team. This is the same design team that originated the exceptional frame design that makes MAGiCYCLE e-bikes both visually appealing and reliably strong.

You will never find any cheap steel in a Magicycle frame. Magicycle has chosen to use the strong and corrosion-resistant 6061 aluminum alloy. This top quality alloy provides exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, light weight, durability, and a defect-free highly pleasing appearance. All this is made possible by employing technology borrowed from the aviation industry.

Industry-Leading Technology

The Magicycle factory employs experts in hydroforming and cataphracted weld joints. These are regarded as the best welding techniques in the world.. This means that Magicycle customers receive a high-tech frame that is strong, safe, and beautiful for unequaled riding stability and comfort.

To summarize, MAGiCYCLE has exemplary quality control over the entire bike-building process, from design to manufacture to shipping. When a Magicycle is delivered to a new owner, the box contains an e-bike that will last a very long time, giving reliable service and a safe riding experience. Quality matters — don’t buy your e-bike from a brand that does not own the factory.

Reliable Components

A big part of MAGiCYCLE quality control is the insistence on using name brand components an every e-bike they build. Of course, this means less profit for the company, but it gives consumers a high-quality product that provides reliable service. This means you get a brand name motor, brand name tires, and much more.

For just one example, the MAGiCYCLE long-range battery is built by the highly respected company, LG. It is a quality product and gives consumers 52 volt power and 20 amp hours. That’s something you can’t find on any competing e-bike brand of equal quality and price.

After-Purchase Expenses

Maintenance

Every vehicle, including the 2-wheel variety, requires maintenance now and then. E-bike owners can increase their safety, as well as the lifespan, of their e-bike by careful and regular maintenance. This will include replacing items such as tires and brake pads

  • Tires— Wipe the grime off your sidewalls, and check for excessive tread wear or cracking sidewalls. If you find either condition, it is time to replace your tires. Otherwise, let them dry and then apply a good tire protectant.  While your at it, be sure to bring the air pressure up to your preference, within recommended parameters for you riding conditions.
  • Rotors— Use a soft rag dipped in isopropyl alcohol to clean your disc brake rotors. This will give you the best braking performance and will not leave any residue on your rotors.
  • Chain— Wipe any grime or excess lubricant from your chain, using a dry cloth. Then lubricate the chain using a good quality chain lubricant. Again, wipe off any excess lubricant so that your chain does not become a dirt magnet.
  • Frame, pedals, components— Use a soft brush, followed by a damp soft rag, to clean the various components and frame. Never use running water or spray liquids to assist with your cleaning. You don’t want to risk getting dampness into places where it will not be welcome.

Making it Tight

Check every screw, nut, bolt, etc. and ensure that all are tightened properly. Consult your owner’s manual for torque specifications, and use a torque wrench to avoid risking over or under tightening…this is important!

Err on the Side of Safety

In the process of inspecting and cleaning your e-bike, it is possible that you may discover problems. If you encounter anything that you cannot confidently handle yourself, it’s time to visit your local bike shop. Don’t take any chances — make sure your e-bike is safe to ride, and prepared to last for many more years. Maintenance is an expense, yes, but it is more than that. It is also a protective step you can take to guard against the large future expenses that will result from neglect.

Add-ons for Your Riding Pleasure

This is one expense where you, the owner and rider, have a large degree of control. You get to decide how you want to “trick out” your ride. Some add-ons are strictly for fun, some just for looks, and some directly affect your safety.

Bike Bags

You may use your e-bike strictly for business, for pleasure, or a mixture of both. Regardless of the primary activity, at times most riders have the need to carry additional items with them. Bike bags are a convenient method of adding useful cargo space to your e-bike, and in a variety of sizes and functions.

MAGiCYCLE has a variety of options available when it comes to bike bags for maximizing your cargo-carrying ability and taking advantage of its 350 pound payload capacity. Every MAGiCYCLE e-bike is equipped with an extra-sturdy rear rack, and you may also want to add a front rack, especially if you occupy the rear rack with a bag.

Other types of bike bags include phone bags, handlebar bags, seat bags, frame bags, and  battery bags. As you discover what types of bags will be helpful for you, look for bargains such as Black Friday sales and lower your cost.

Electricity for Your Battery

The average American has expenses of more than $15,000 annually just for commuting to work, routine driving, and perhaps an occasional leisure trip. When you add a Magicyle to your life, you can give yourself a very nice discount on the cost of getting from Point A to Point B. It cost only about 4 to 6 cents to fully recharge your battery. Naturally, the more you pedal, the less often you need a recharge.

For example, with the reliability of Magicycle, you’ll love commuting to work worry-free. You know you’ll get there on time and you’ll do it for a mere fraction of the cost involved with an automobile…or even public transportation. In fact, you could easily save more than $400 monthly compared to automobile expenses

And when you have to make a quick trip for a gallon of milk, just leave the car in your driveway. The savings add up, and you’ll have a much more enjoyable journey on your Magicycle!

Exactly how much can you save? Everybody’s different, but it’s safe to say you’re looking at substantial savings every month. And remember, you can purchase your Magicycle using PayPal’s monthly payment plan–or just use a credit card. Your monthly transportation savings could easily cover the payment on your shiny new e-bike!
